Retired spy Charlie Gauntlet travels to a Scottish monastery to investigate five ancient scrolls stashed there by the infamous traitor, Kit Palfrey. Meanwhile, Gauntlet's new wife, Bex Olesker, and her colleagues in the London Police's Anti-Terrorist Branch hope to stop the assassin known as the Alchemist.
