Nel and Sula were the best of friends during their childhood together in Medallion, Ohio. They grew up surrounded by such offbeat characters as crazy Shadrack, and one-legged Eva. Nel chose to stay in Medallion to raise a family, but Sula went to the city and returned as a rebellious seductress.
